Paving the way for broadband

The National Telecommunications Commission inaugurated its Bt30-million Telecommunications Research and Industrial Development Institute yesterday.
The institute will seek Bt60 million from the commission this year for research and development, with a focus on access network equipment, said its chairman Kosol Petchsuwan. Access equipment is the priority because it is key to connecting with the telecom backbone network to provide broadband services. Broadband use is growing rapidly in Thailand with the number of subscribers expected to reach 1 million by year-end. "The institute will coordinate with private companies to pursue research and development. We'll also focus on how to promote the use of products arising from the research," Kosol said. The institute plans to create a database of ICT researchers in Thailand and will collaborate with them on research projects, he said, adding that there were 2,000 to 3,000 ICT researchers here. The commission plans to establish two more institutes. About Bt80 million is being spent on training staff for the Interconnection Charge Knowledge Training Institute, which will offer training in a broad range of ICT fields. A Consumer Protection Institute is also in the pipeline. It is expected to cost Bt60 million to set up.
