Deep-South bill gets provisional NLA green light

The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) yesterday accepted in principle the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre draft bill, part of the government's strategy to end the deep-South conflict.

The NLA voted 95 to 11 to accept the bill.

The Interior Ministry legislation establishes the centre as a special task force to tackle the region's protracted insurgency.

An NLA majority wants the government to solve the crisis systematically. It said the legislation needed improvement.

Chamlong Srimuang criticised military tactics employed in the region, asserting soldiers patrolled in large squads and failed to adapt to everyday situations.

This is wasteful and fails to protect citizens and themselves, he said.

The government must use lessons learned by soldiers who fought in Laos and Vietnam.

The NLA appointed a 24-member committee to examine the bill.
