National games 'safe'

The organising committee assured that the 36th National Games, which will be staged in Nakhon Si Thammarat from September 15 to 25, will be safe for all participants.
Soldiers from the Royal Thai Fourth Army Base and some local police officers will be in charge of the tournament, relieving all participants' anxiety about the unstable situation in the three southern provinces. Provincial governor Somsak Khamtaweeprom said officials were ready to host the games. "We think the event will go off without a hitch," Somsak said. "We are ready in every aspect of the arrangements. We do not have a financial problem and have also received full support from the government. "We received a budget of over Bt80 million from the Sports Authority of Thailand and more Bt40million from the local administrative organisation." Somsak said the organisers will spend a reasonable amount on the opening and closing ceremony. The 11-day meet will feature 31 sports including athletics, badminton, gymnastics, swimming and taekwondo. The event will be held in four main sports complexes in the province except shooting and golf which will be held in Bangkok and Phang Nga. The image of Phra Baromatat Chedi (Pagoda of Sacred Relics) will be applied as the Games' emblem, while the swift will be the event's official mascot.
