In brief :Sondhi stays on air

The Public Relations Department is ready to adjust the content of the programme "Yam Fao Paen Din" run by Sondhi Limthongkul, director-general Pramote Ratvinij said yesterday.

Pramote said the department would evaluate the programme after it has been on air for two weeks. The nightly programme on state-run Channel 11, which started last week, has been heavily criticised.

Pramote said the department agreed Sonthi could attack third parties but would risk being sued for slander. "If there is a libel suit, the station cannot escape responsibility," he said.

Boost for NCCC

The Cabinet yesterday approved a law amendment to allow the National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC) to launch investigations without having to have damaged parties or accusers lodge a complaint.

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said the Cabinet gave the nod to the Justice Ministry proposal to amend the National Counter Corruption Act.

The move came after the Asset Examination Committee had run into legal snags in its investigations because state agencies - who are damaged parties - have refused to file complaints against political officer holders.

Star's baby dies

The premature baby of high profile couple Willy and Geraldine ("Yelly") McIntosh was pronounced dead yesterday, 17 hours after the delivery.

Dr Tongtis Tongyai of Piyavate Hospital said the cause of death was related to the baby's lungs not having developed sufficiently. The boy was only 26 weeks old. He weighed 1.12kg.

"His organs did not function properly because of the premature birth and we did what we could to save him," he said.

Willy and Geraldine married in June last year. Geraldine conceived twin babies through zygote intra-fallopian transfer, but one miscarried when the pregnancy reached the fifth month.

The doctor said Geraldine would be able to conceive again.
