Pojaman still waiting

The Bank of Thailand (BOT) said it would not take long to decide whether to approve Khunying Pojaman Shinawatra's request to transfer Bt400 million in cash to the United Kingdom to buy a house.

Tarisa Watanagase, governor of the BOT, said yesterday the central bank would consider the case after the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) showed its consent to the transfer.

Secretary-general Pol Col Yuthaboon Disaman said yesterday that by attempting to transfer the money, Pojaman is not violating the anti-money laundering law.

Tarisa said the central bank will consider the money transfer in respect of guidelines, documents, and evidence.

"If all the documents are complete, it won't take too long," Tarisa said.

The BOT governor insisted that although the transfer approval is the central bank's authority, the BOT would like to ask for comments from AMLO as well as the Assets Examination Committee (AEC) on whether the BOT approval would have any legal impact on investigations launched by the two agencies against Thaksin.
