Late News :Tax breaks for newly listed firms

The Cabinet yesterday approved a Finance Ministry proposal to extend tax privileges for newly listed firms on the Stock Exchange of Thailand.

Ministry spokesman Somchai Sujjapongse said eligible firms must be listed between January and December this year. The corporate tax rate for firms newly listed on the bourse will be 25 per cent, down from the normal 30 per cent. Firms listed with the Market for Alternative Investment will enjoy a 20-per-cent corporate tax rate.

The tax break will last for three consecutive accounting years after a company lists.

The tax privileges, originally introduced by the Thaksin administration, expired at the end of last year.

Big Nordic influx

TUI Nordic Tour Agency has launched two new charter flight routes directly linking Surat Thani with Stockholm and Helsinki in the next high tourist season later this year.

The route will be flown by Boeing 757s, which can carry 235 passengers.

The agency is also offering a new range of 14-day leisure packages in conjunction with the charter flights. It predicts the number of visitor arrivals from Nordic countries to Thailand will rise to 130,000 during the coming winter season, up 85.71 per cent from a figure of 70,000 in one recent high season.

Mulling iTV's fate

Beleaguered broadcaster iTV has called an extraordinary shareholders' meeting for March 20, to consider the company's options in solving disputes with the PM's Office and the huge penalties it must pay the office.

At the meeting, shareholders will learn of progress in the disputes and be asked to consider and approve procedures for settlement.

The company is required to pay penalties of more than Bt100 billion by March 3.

ITV's board of directors approved the resignation of four directors on Monday, including Somprasong Boonyachai, CEO of Advanced Info Service - the flagship company of Shin Corp, which owns 53 per cent of iTV. The other three were Sarita Bunnag, Siripen Sitasuwan, and Dumrong Kasemset.

Replacing them are Somkid Wangcherdchuwong, Ajsha Suwonpakprak, Boonchai Siripoksup and Suparanant Tanvirach.

Diesel price cut

Fuel stations will cut their retail prices for diesel 40 satang a litre today, because of oversupplies in Asia.

PTT senior executive vice president Chaiwat Chooritti said the oversupplies were coming from refineries in Japan and South Korea in particular.

The price of finished diesel is now US$67.97 (Bt2,423) per barrel.

Following today's cut, high-speed diesel will cost Bt22.94 a litre.
