Egat to invest Bt34 bn in 2008

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) board of directors yesterday approved an investment budget of Bt34 billion for fiscal 2008. Deputy governor Apichart Diloksophon said that while Bt10 billion would come from borrowing, the rest would come from Egat's own revenues.
"The borrowing will finance an Bt8.5-billion investment in four power plants and a Bt1.5-billion investment in a transmission grid," he said. Seventy-five per cent of the loan would be denominated in foreign currencies. Egat will also issue extra bonds worth Bt4.5 billion to roll over bonds of the same value which mature in the fiscal year.Meanwhile, Egat will soon sign an agreement with the Royal Irrigation Department for joint investment in small hydropower plants. Six dams will be built under the department's control. Egat will fund construction with an initial budget of Bt4.5 billion, then remit part of the returns from power from the dams.
