Ministry mulls future water supply

The Industry Ministry yesterday drew up a plan to ease water shortages affecting the manufacturing sector within 10 years, said Deputy Industry Minister Piyabutr Cholvijarn.

Officials met to discuss information on the problem collected by the Industrial Works Department.

The department collected data on supply and demand for water in the eastern provinces and found that industrial use within 10 years would be near a critical level.

Consequently it is essential that the government put in place suitable measures for water management to ensure there are sufficient supplies, Piyabutr said.

The department will put forward its recommendations to the government at a later date.

Piyabutr said heavy rain last year had raised water levels in reservoirs by sufficient volume to support industrial output for two years.

Nonetheless the government has drawn up plans to lay a pipeline from Klong Yai to Krasae in Chanthaburi to ease any water shortage.

The water pipeline should be completed within two weeks.
