Somjit may get a gold after all

[BOXING] Thailand are likely to be awarded two more Asian Games medals after positive tests on two Filipino boxers for using banned substances.

Violito Payla, the champion in the flyweight division, and Joan Tipon, the silver medallist in the bantamweight class, will be stripped of their medals if their B samples are found positive, International Amateur Boxing Association said.

In such a case, Thailand's Somjit Jongjohor will take the gold in the 51kg category while Worapoj Petchkoom will be promoted to the runner-up position in the 54kg category and a silver medal awarded to him.

Somjit and Worapoj will receive prize money of Bt500,000 and 300,000 respectively from the government.

However, Thailand's place in the medals standing will not change as they are far behind fourth-placed Kazakhstan, who finished with 23 gold medals. Thailand collected 13 gold medals in the Games.

Meanwhile, the World Amateur Boxing Championship, which is scheduled for September 15 to 30 in Russia, will serve as one of the qualifying rounds for the Olympics Games in Beijing next year.

Semi-finalists in each division of the World Championship will earn automatic berths for the Games.
