Tamarine stops Chan in round 1
[TENNIS] Tamarine Tanasugarn halted the run of Taiwanese qualifier Chan Chin-wei in the first round of the US$175,000 Sony Ericsson International which began yesterday after a day was lost due to a general strike in the host city Bangalore.
Tamarine, who rose to 77 in the world rankings this week, defeated Chan 6-3 6-3 to reach the second round of the tournament, her fourth of the year. The seventh-seed won the tournament four years ago when it was held in Hyderabad. She will play the winner of the second round match between Indian Shikha Uberoi, a wildcard entrant, and Russian Yaroslava Shevdova. Countrywoman Nudnida Luangnam, who fought her way through the qualifying round, failed to prolong her winning streak in the event, losing to Ukraine's Yulia Beygelzimer 6-2 6-1.
