Donations to schools banned

The Education Ministry is to ban state schools from receiving any donations during the admission period, which usually runs from March 15 to April 8.

"This is a measure to pre-empt any offer of tea money for school seats," Education Minister Wijit Srisa-an said yesterday.

He said the measure had already been included in a draft regulation, which he will approve by the end of the week.

It is an open secret that some parents are willing to offer a huge amount of cash - sometimes hundreds of thousands of baht - to secure places at prestigious schools for their children.

"Admissions must be conducted with equality," Wijit insisted.

The minister said the new regulation would clearly state that any school administrator - or anyone failing to adhere to admission rules - would risk disciplinary investigation, transfer or dismissal.

At this point, the regulation does not affect private schools.

Wijit will explain the details of the new regulation to the executives of 360 leading state schools on Sunday.
