Regional winners in Irish essay contest

Winners of the third Impac Dublin Literary Award essay competition (Northern Chapter), under the title "A Tale of Thai Grace and Compassion" were announced this weekend in Chiang Mai.
First prize went to Jinjutha na Srito, 16, from Chiang Mai International School, who was awarded Bt10,000 in cash, a certificate, three plane tickets and accommodation in Bangkok in order to attend the awards ceremony. Second prize went to Kim Vongbunyong, 17, from the same school, while Sarana Mukura, 16, from Phitsanulok Pittayakom School won third prize. Both second and third prize winners received an award of Bt5,000. A special award went to Hathaiporn Kraikruan, 15, from Yupparaj Wittayalai School, because the judges were impressed by her creativity. The competition, held nationwide to promote creative writing among 14 to 18 year olds, is sponsored by The Nation, Nation Junior, Citylife magazine, Enterprise Ireland and the Irish embassy. The judges were Susan Lee Offner, senior editor of Silkworm Books, Auyporn Chinchayanurak, head of Payap University's English department and Pim Kemasingki, managing editor of Citylife. The national winner will be announced tomorrow at the Conrad Hotel in Bangkok and will receive a free trip to Ireland to attend the Senior Dublin Literary Awards ceremony.
