Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont has assured iTV staff that the management change at the station will not affect their jobs or the news department, assistant news director Kitti Singhapat said yesterday.
Kitti quoted Surayud as saying: "The transition of iTV's management is expected to be smooth and will not affect broadcasting or staff." Kitti had led a group of 20 journalists and technical staff to submit a petition calling for the government to ensure an orderly transition at the station. The petition was lodged after management said it was unable to pay concession fees and a fine for overdue payments totalling Bt100 billion within a 30-day deadline. As a result of the concession default, the PM's Office, which oversees the broadcasting concession, will cancel the concession contract and replace iTV's management. In their petition, iTV staff made four requests: The station's broadcasting and programming should not be interrupted; it should remain an independent news outlet; there should be no outside interference in the editorial department; and, its 1,070 employees should not be affected by the management change.
