Overseas call licences okayed for DTAC, N&T

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has approved in principle the granting of licences to Total Access Communication (DTAC) and N&T of True Corp for the operation of overseas call services.
An NTC source said the approvals were made last week. In response to the approval, DTAC yesterday announced the spending of Bt2 billion to create an overseas call network, which is expected to be up and running by the end of the year. DTAC's head of international business Wansit Saiyawan said the company would offer both conventional and Voice-over-Internet-Protocol calls. It will offer the service at a competitive price to attract customers, he added. Wansit said the overseas call service would help boost DTAC's revenue from international call roaming services, which it expects to be Bt5 billion this year. A source at True said True's wholly owned subsidiary N&T would spend Bt1 billion on creating an international call network. Both DTAC and N&T are waiting for the NTC to allocate each of them a three-digit number for customers to access overseas calls. Last year, the NTC granted an overseas call licence to Advanced International Network, a wholly owned subsidiary of cellular operator Advanced Info Service. CAT Telecom and TOT are currently the two providers of overseas calls. Telecom Reporters The Nation
