Lotteries to continue

The controversial two- and three-digit lottery will continue even if the Council of State decides the Thaksin government had no legal position to launch it, Finance Minister MR Pridiyathorn Devakula said yesterday.

Pridiyathorn, who is also deputy premier, said he had not received the council's legal interpretation.

"I need to read that first, then I'll find a way to continue operating the lottery. I have plenty of options," he said.

Panas Simasathien, who served on a council committee studying the legality of the lottery, said on Tuesday his panel had completed its findings, but did not say whether the lotteries had been set up illegally. "The task of scrutinising whether the Thaksin Cabinet violated the law belongs to the finance minister," Panas added.

PM's Office Minister Prasith Kowilaikul yesterday confirmed it was Pridiyathorn's decision whether to continue operating the lottery
