A bomb went off in Pattani province yesterday and slightly injured two police officers as they were inspecting a travel route for HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
The bomb was planted under a tree close to a bus stop near Yaring Hospital. It exploded at around 7.30am, just hours ahead of the arrival of the princess. Meanwhile, one man was shot dead and another injured in separate attacks in the deep South. In Songkhla's Sabayoi district, Wid Srihasang, 49, was killed while collecting rubber at a plantation. He died instantly at the scene after being shot twice, police said. In Yala's Than To district, Jiraphot Thepso, 30, was taken to hospital with hand injuries after being shot while riding a motorbike to work at a rubber plantation. The situation in the predominantly Muslim region will be a topic of discussion when Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi meets Thai premier Surayud Chulanont during his three-day visit to Thailand, starting on Sunday. On the agenda is an idea to build a wall on the border between the countries in Narathiwat and Malaysia's Kelantan state to prevent illegal crossings. The plight of 130 Thai Muslims who fled to Malaysia in 2005 will also be discussed. About 2,000 people have died since violence erupted in the deep South at the start of 2004.
