Historians back academic in defamation case

Leading historians have launched a campaign to protect academic freedom in support of Morakot Jewachinda who is facing a defamation charge filed by the former rector of Thammasat University (TU), Khunying Nongyao Chaiseree.

The former rector has accused Morakot of defaming her in her book: "The Images of Pridi Banomyong and Thai Politics, 1932-1983".

Nongyao said Morakot has stated in her book that Nongyao had "disrespected" Pridi, an accusation which she has strongly denied. She claimed her reputation has been damaged by the book. But support for Morakot appeared to be gaining momentum.

About 60 historians on Monday held a seminar on the case at Chulalongkorn University (CU) and helped set up the "History Academic Freedom Fund", to support Morakot.

Chalong Soontravanich at CU's History Department, said a growing number of historians are facing threats against their work simply because it is perceived as challenging previous works and beliefs.

Rangsit University's assistant professor Thamrongsak Petchlert-anan said the case against Morakot was a "destruction of academic freedom".

"It is a normal matter if the case was made by a politician, but not by people who are used to having a role in protecting academic freedom," Thanongsak said.

He said Morakot's case has created a climate of fear in academic circles.

"How can we work to search for the truth?," he asked.

There is also the concern that such a climate of fear would take its toll on the public's right to know, he said.

"There are still many theses that scholars dare not make public out of fear they would face legal charges or cause public outrage," said senior historian Kanchanee Laongsri.

In response to Khunying Nongyao's petition, TU rector Suraphol Nitikraipoj has halted the distribution of the book since last November.

Meanwhile, former rector Charnvit Kasetsiri will today give testimony at Bangkaen police station at 6pm, to give support to Morakot and her book, and state that it was an academic work.
