Gruesome murders

A villager was brutally murdered while two others were shot dead in separate incidents as the violence continued in the Muslim majority south yesterday.

Kachen Nimitsakul, 37, was found dead on a roadside in Rangae district of Narathiwat yesterday morning. Police said there was a serious wound to his head and they suspected his skull was broken. Police found a motorbike nearby and a 1.8 metre wooden stick with blood stains on it.

Police suspected that Kachen's murder might stem from his closeness to the authorities. Kachen was married to a Muslim woman and has often travelled through the red-zone area.

Around the same time in Pattani's Khok Pho district, fire-fighter Mongkhon Surakarn, 34, was shot dead while riding his motorbike with his wife and his daughter. Police said two gunmen riding on a motorbike approached him and shot him in the head. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital. His wife, Yaowanit Surakarn who is a teacher at a local school was slightly injured.

Late on Monday night, Kareeya Kameng, 19, a student at Thammawitthaya Foundation School was shot dead while sitting in front of his house. Police said two gunmen riding on a motorbike opened fire with an AK-47 assault rifle before speeding away. Kareeya died instantly in the hail of bullets.

Police believed Muslim militants were behind all the attacks. The violence erupted in the deep South at the beginning of 2004 and has claimed about 2000 lives.
