Yamamoto powers past Furukawa

[ARCHERY] Athens Olympic silver medallist Hiroshi Yamamoto overcame the searing heat and a shaky start to capture the men's recurve individual gold medal in the Asian Grand Prix Archery first leg at the Hua Mark Range yesterday.

Yamamoto, who finished third in the 70m, 70-arrow recurve shoot-out on Saturday, powered past Takaharu Furukawa 112-109 in the all-Japanese showdown yesterday. Furukawa became the first gold medallist of the 19-nation tournament on Saturday when he shot 660 points. Malaysian Chery Chu Sian narrowly beat compatriot Mohd Khalmizan 115-113 for third place.

In the women's compound individual Olympic round yesterday, Filipina Amaya Paz shattered Hansda Jhanu's dream of winning her second gold of the meet. The Indian archer lost 112-107 in the final. Jhanu claimed her first gold in the compound individual shoot-out event on Saturday.

Thailand's best hope Narissara Thinbua, who lost her crown in the compound shoot-out the previous day, suffered a similar fate yesterday, going down 117-106 to Malaysian Sudin Siti in the third-place play-off.

Earlier, in the women's recurve individual round event, Japanese Hayakawa Nami grabbed the gold medal, narrowly beating Hayashi Yuki 107-106 in the all-Japanese match. Iran's Najameh Abtin picked up the bronze after pipping India's Rosie Lairamhlum 101-100 in the play-off.

Filipino Benjamin Yap won the day's last gold. Yap, fresh from clinching the men's compound individual shoot-out gold medal on Saturday, outclassed Singaporean Heng Fook Hup 116-109 in the men's compound individual Olympic round event. Malaysian Lang Hong Keong defeated Burmese Ye Min Swe 115-114 to win the bronze medal.
