Woman, two kids cleared of bird flu

An Angthong woman and her young daughter suspected of having caught avian flu were yesterday diagnosed with human influenza.
A boy in Phichit who revealed that he had touched a dead pigeon was also diagnosed with human influenza (H3N2). The three-year-old girl was discharged from a hospital on Friday and her mother yesterday. The three-year-old boy was still receiving hospital treatment but is recovering. In Ayutthaya, a man was apprehended for herding a flock of 6,000 ducks in a quarantined area in Pathum Thani's Sam Khoke district. The unnamed 20-year-old, who said he was paid to take care of the flock, was arrested and fined Bt10,000 for doing the same two weeks ago. Meanwhile 40 people from a number of central provinces were undergoing lab tests to determine whether they have contracted avian flu. Another 387 people tested were cleared, said Public Health Ministry spokesman Dr Suphan Srithamma. He said the ministry and volunteer workers were closely monitoring any areas with reports of mass poultry deaths. In such areas, 14-day watch-and-quarantine operations could be carried out without initial approval from local public health offices or complete diagnoses indicating avian flu. Apart from avoiding direct contact with farm and wild poultry or eating uncooked meat, Suphan said regular exercise, keeping warm and ensuring adequate rest could help to guard against avian flu.
