Violence continues in deep south

Eleven soldiers and three civilians were injured in several bombings in the Muslim South on Monday.
Seven members of an Army patrol sustained minor injuries when a roadside bomb exploded in Bacho district of Narathiwat at 7am.Seven district officials travelling to the scene in a personnel carrier escaped injury when a second roadside bomb exploded. In Sungai Padi three soldiers sustained minor injuries when a bomb exploded during a routine patrol. Yesterday afternoon a roadside bomb was detonated in Rangae district and injured Private Leab Wewichaigo, 22, a teachers' guard. Police said the soldier was with 15 squad members escorting Ban Kathong School teachers to their homes. Soldiers opened fire on suspected militants who fled. In Pattani a roadside bomb exploded in Khok Pho district injuring well-known village headman Kuheng Sa-I. It is believed he was targeted by insurgents. He and two passengers sustained injuries when a 15-kilogram bomb destroyed his pickup vehicle. In late December Kuheng was ambushed by suspected insurgents. He killed two in a gun battle. He was decorated for bravery by Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont. More than 1,900 people have died in deep-South violence in the past three years in spite of government promises to restore peace to the region. The Nation
