Govt puts up with brickbats

The government is determined to accomplish its two key tasks - reconciling the social division and quelling the southern violence, and will heed criticism while doing the job, its spokesman Yongyuth Mayalarb said yesterday.

Yongyuth was reacting to comments by Thammasat University lecturer Thirayuth Boonmi on Thursday.

"Thirayuth is entitled to air his views, and the government will not waver in its determination to complete the job it has set out to do," Yongyuth said.

Thirayuth labelled the Surayud Chulanont administration "unseasoned turmeric" and the Council for National Security (CNS) "tempura flour". He coined the two terms to depict what he saw as the failure to catch up with political tricks churned out by the ousted Thaksin regime.

First Army Region commander Lt-General Prayuth Chan-ocha said the government and the CNS were obliged to act within the rule of law, which might be perceived as a slow response.

"As with the investigation of corruption involving the ousted government, it takes time to collect evidence," he said. Prayuth said the military was doing its best to restore normalcy, paving way for the next general election. - The Nation
