Pledge to better '97

Constitution Drafting Committee chairman Prasong Soonsiri yesterday pledged that the CDC will produce a charter that will outshine the 1997 Constitution.

Prasong said the Thaksin Shinawatra government had taken power from the public and the military had helped the public by seizing it back. "When we return power to the public, we will make sure that all power is returned," he said.

He said the intention of writing a new charter was to reform politics and to have a practical constitution that suited Thai society. He said the draft charter will be ready for a referendum by September.

He denied that drafters would write a constitution that would help the military cling to power. "It is out of the question. People are just too worried. I am sitting here and no one has ever ordered me to write in a way that they can cling to power," he said.

Prasong said the constitution would stress the need for morality and ethics from politicians and contain punishments for those who violate it. It would be concise and easy to understand.
