His Excellency Eugene Hutchinson, the Irish Ambassador to Thailand, recently hosted a meeting of the judging panel for the third annual Junior IMPAC Dublin Literary Awards for Thailand.
The results will be announced at a presentation ceremony on February 12 at Conrad Bangkok Hotel. About 150 people, including heads of English departments, students with parents, businessmen, academics and distinguished guests from non-profit organisations, will attend the gala dinner. The awards, which promote creative English-language essay-writing amongst Thai high-school students, kicked off in November last year in four regions of the country. Entries under the theme "A Tale of Thai Grace and Compassion" were accepted from December 15 from students between the ages of 14 to 18. Regional winners will receive cash prizes and the national winner will receive a free trip to Ireland to attend the Senior Dublin Literary Awards ceremony. The awards are sponsored by international productivity consultant IMPAC and Enterprise Ireland. In Thailand, the contest is organised by The Nation, Nation Junior and affiliated publications and sponsored by IMPAC, Enterprise Ireland, the Embassy of Ireland and PCS Co. The writer of the winning essay in each region will receive Bt10,000, with two merit awards of Bt5,000. The national winner will then be chosen from the regional winners. The free trip is for the author and one parent to Dublin.
