Kiosks encourage an interest in history

To encourage an interest in Thai literature and culture amongst teenagers, Silpakorn University will set up a kiosk to provide multimedia facilities at Wat Thepthidaram to promote the works of the great poet Soontronpoo.
Panjai Pantatsanawong, 0director at the Computer Centre at Silpakorn University, said the university is setting up the kiosk to make electronic books about the poems and history of Soontronpoo at the temple. It aims promote multimedia facilities for Thai literature and cultural activities. The university will also promote the literature of the great poet on its website www.svbhumi.com, to make it available to Thai people overseas."The website will allow Thais who live in other countries to study Thai literature and culture," said Panjai. He said Thai teenagers are now less interested in Thai culture compared with international culture such as Korean drama. In the earlier stages, the university will provide Rampan Pirat, poetry related to the history of Soontronpoo, in multimedia format. "We hope to use information and communications technology as tools to encourage youngsters to study literature and culture to encourage interest in these subjects in the future," said Panjai. "The kiosk is not only to promote the work and life of the great poet but also to help the disabled," said Panjai. The university plans to later work with the Culture Ministry, Industry Ministry and the Tourism Authority of Thailand to provide the knowledge about culture and literature in an English version.
