Music industry sees the light

Thai music and media industries must look towards new business models, shifting from content-driven to consumer-based approaches.

Marcel Fenez, of PricewaterhouseCoopers Asia-Pacific's entertainment and media practice division, said the global music industry had changed dramatically and after a prolonged period of decline was finally showing signs of reinventing itself.

"The global music industry is coming out of years of darkness, and light is beginning to appear," he said.

Fenez said mobile technology was dominating Thailand, with digital catching up rapidly.

He said customers were no longer in a static environment because of dramatic growth in the mobile market. Consumers now access what information they want, when they want it, wherever they want, he added.

"The power is shifting to the consumer, so businesses have to grasp the fact that the consumer is king," said Fenez.

Fenez said Thailand's music industry was "very attractive" and known internationally for its creativity.
