BMA eyes cameras to protect city

Bangkok residents will be monitored by millions of baht worth of surveillance cameras by April, as city officials have pushed forward the plan to install a surveillance system throughout the city following the bombings on New Year's Eve.
Bangkok deputy governor Rattapol Meethanathavorn yesterday said Bt66-million worth of cameras and equipment would be delivered next month and installed soon after. The BMA's Traffic and Transportation Department had planned to place the cameras at pedestrian overpasses, parking areas and major shopping areas, among other locations. Rattapol said the department had been instructed to expand the surveillance system and possibly link it to the police and other security agencies.
