Pollution at Map Ta Phut has to be controlled : Kosit

National Environment Board said Monday that if the operators cannot control the air pollution in Map Ta Phut area within one year, it would be declared the pollution control zone, Industry Minister Kosit Panpiemras said Monday.
If the operators cannot curb the toxic substance emission, the area will be considered the special zone which is subject to special control measures. For instance, new factories would not be allowed until the pollution can be reduced until a certain limit. Kosit was speaking after meeting with the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand on the issue that IEAT also proposed the action plan at the industry ministry. IEAT suggested that there should be a requirement for the factories to close the chimney and install the equipment to control pollution to prevent the leakage of hazardous substance discharged from the factories. The authorities would monitor ten factories, including the power plants, which discharged nydrogen dioxide. It was found that four power plants in Map Ta Phut including BLCP, Rayong, Glow SPP 3 and PTT power plant discharged 69 per cent of nydrogen dioxide, . Uthai Junthima, IEAT governor, said apart from factories located inside Map Ta Phut, the authorities also closely monitored the situation at IRPC which is located outside but nearby Map Ta Phut.
