Pattaya ready to host World petanque

[PETANQUE] After staging two world-class tournaments successfully, the Petanque Association of Thailand plans to make the 43rd World Petanque Championships at the Pattaya Indoor Athletics Stadium from September 19 to 23 a memorable one.

Petanque is a form of boules,

or outdoor bowling, where the object is to throw metal balls as close as possible to a target wooden ball.

Privy Councillor and PAT president Air Vice Marshal Kamthon Sindhavananda said preparations were on the right track, with athletes from more than 60 countries confirming participation for the five-day tournament.

"This will be a unique opportunity to promote Thailand throughout the world and to create a positive image of the country in the world community. The prestigious event will also mark the auspicious occasion of HM the King's 80th birthday anniversary and honour HRH the Princess Sri Nagarindra the Princess Mother," he said.

"The Princess Mother played an important role in making the sport known and played widely in the country. Thai athletes have proved that they are the world's best, winning gold medals in the previous world competitions."

Chiang Mai and Phuket have already served as battlegrounds for the world meet several years ago. The 42nd episode was held

in France and Thai athletes returned proudly with four medals, including two golds in the women's team and one for men's single shooting from Thalernkiart Phusa-ard.

Thamnoon Wanglee, president of the organising committee, said many foreign athletes were keen on participating in the event. The world meet will be a tune-up for the Thai squad taking part in the SEA Games in December.
