SECURITY IN BANGKOK
Pet dogs to be trained to sniff out explosives

City police urge all Labrador, German shepherd owners to sign up for course

Bangkok police have invited people who own German shepherds and Labradors to bring their pet dogs for training as bomb and drug detectors.

Special Operations Police Division Commandant Maj-General Vimon Pao-in yesterday said patrol dogs were now in high demand because of the increased bomb threat and reports of suspicious items around the city.

Unfortunately, police have an inadequate number of sniffer dogs due to a lack of budget to recruit and train more, he said. So, they are calling on the pet dogs of Bangkok to do their duty.

Yesterday was the official launch of the project to train pet German shepherds and Labradors as sniffer dogs.

The first two-day training course will start today with the participation of about 100 owners who registered their pets. The dogs will be trained in sniffing and trailing skills as well as being trained to remember and distinguish the smells of specific people, drugs and several kinds of explosive devices.

"The two breeds have special skills, so I want to ask owners to bring their pets to help with official tasks. At least, the training will help increase the capability of every dog. Your dogs can be more than pets," said Maj Gen Vimon.

Dog owners will be trained in medical care for their pets as well as techniques in dog massage.

Both dogs and owners who pass the course will receive certificates.
