Prasong, Prem meet

Prasong Soonsiri yesterday met with Privy Council President Prem Tinsulanonda at Prem's Sisao Theves residence amid rumours that Prasong would be supported as chairman of the new constitution-drafting team.
Prasong has been chosen by sections of the junta and is expected to be the chairman. However, some writers disagree.Charan Pakdithanakul, a charter writer under the Constitution Drafting Assembly (CDA) quota, was also suitable to be chairman but likely to withdraw, because he did not want to resign as Justice Ministry permanent secretary. Some CDA member also took to the floor to remind their peers that everyone, and not just CDA members, would be accountable. Prasong denied making any comment himself and said it depended on the 35 drafters who will pick a chairman today. Meanwhile, charter writers said the chairman was not as important as the drafting of the new charter. Wuthisarn Tanchai said he failed to understand why society was against Prasong, saying the chairman was not the main issue. The important point was the 35-person assembly who must put forward the new constitution. Witthya Ngantavee, another drafter, agreed. He said society should change its attitude and consider Prasong's qualifications. "Everyone has made sacrifices to become a charter writer. If it is Prasong or someone else who is qualified to be chairman, we should support them rather than be prejudiced," he said. Praphasri Osathanont, Sucheera Pinijparakarn The Nation
