One dead, 6 hurt

Separate bomb and gun attacks in the deep South yesterday and late Tuesday killed one and injured six people, including three police.

An explosion in front of a retail shop in Narathiwat's Tak Bai district at about 9pm Tuesday night injured three police as they stopped at the shop while on patrol, police said.

The bomb was made of five kilograms of ammonium nitrate and triggered by a mobile phone, an official said. The explosion also damaged the roof of the shop and a police car.

In Narathiwa's Sungai Padi district, Muhamad Samri Umar, 23, was shot dead yesterday while riding a motorbike on his way home.

In neighbouring Yala province, three people were injured in a gun attack while they were watching television in their house on Tuesday night.
