Biodiesel plant set to start

The first biodiesel plant in Thailand will start operating in Surat Thani province next month, producing a daily output of 10,000 tonnes.

The prototype plant, located in Kanchanadit district and owned and operated by the Surat Thani Provincial Authority Organisation, will produce biodiesel using palm oil supplied mainly by local growers. The alternative fuel will be used by trucks and vehicles with diesel engines.

The operation of the Bt18.5-million plant will begin officially on February 16, the day it is inaugurated by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, Interior Minister Aree Wongsearaya said yesterday after an inspection visit.

Biodiesel produced at the plant, which has yet to be named, will cost users only slightly more than untaxed diesel sold exclusively to fishing trawlers. The plant will also have a demonstration room to educate visitors about production.
