Govt 'weak on economy and media'

Support for the military-backed government has fallen again and it is perceived as weak on the economy and press freedom.
The Abac Poll Research Centre survey found that fewer than half those questioned considered the Surayud Chulanont government's economic performance to be satisfactory. The government scored a rating of only 4.62 out of 10 - a fall from last month when it scored 5.02. International and local investment moves left 49.9 per cent of respondents unhappy. The government rated 5.81 in political and administrative performance. On press freedom and social responsibility, 57.7 per cent said the government was unsatisfactory. The government's failure to deliver on its promise of news-media freedom upset 54.5 per cent of respondents. Social issues brought the government a 7.34-point approval rating but 52.4 per cent said it was dissatisfied with support for women's rights and security. The prime minister has promised to improve the government's performance after recent polls suggested it was losing support. The poll was conducted between January 10 and January 20 and questioned 2,144 respondents in Bangkok and the provinces.
