Flowerpot bomb injures six in South

A powerful bomb hidden in a flowerpot near the entrance of a Narathiwat restaurant injured at least six people in another violent incident in the restive region.

The explosive went off at 7.30pm during peak hour at the Blue Corner restaurant on Traipop Road in Narathiwat's Muang district.

Four women, including a cook, and two men were injured.

Police said they believe the bomb was detonated by a mobile phone.

Meanwhile, the owner of a local dynamo-repair shop in Pattani's Ma-yor district was shot dead when two gunmen on motorcycles fired at him repeatedly.

Police suspected that the four men taking part in the attack were insurgents, as part of a campaign of terror in the deep South.

Chalerm Inthararit, 54, sustained several shot wounds and succumbed to the injuries after he was admitted to hospital.

His son fired shots at the fleeing attackers. One of them was shot and fell off a motorcycle. However, his accomplices managed to take him back on the motorbike and escaped.

Thailand's predominantly Malay-speaking South has been rocked by a wave of violence, resulting in the death of about 2,000 since January 2004.

Authorities blamed a new generation of militants bent on separating the three Muslim-majority provinces from the Thai state.
