Don't lose faith, top doctor says

An award-winning virologist encouraged young doctors yesterday not to abandon goals of providing good health for all. "Don't lose courage when facing failures. Amazing things in technology and science happen because people keep on going after encoun-tering failure," Dr Prasert Thongcharoen said.
Last month Prasert received the Public Health Recognition Award from the Asia-Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health. Thse consortium held its 38th annual conference in Bangkok from December 3 to December 6.Prasert was among this coun-try's first doctors to speak out about bird-flu outbreaks in 2003. He has led research into severe acute res-piratory syndrome, or Sars, and the H5N1 strain of bird flu. Prasert said the consortium award meant a lot to him. "It shows my work has been recognised as useful to international public health," he said. He encouraged young doctors to stick to their goals and work hard. "Their efforts are meaningful and will improve public health," Prasert said. The Nation
