M'sia PM to visit soon

Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi will visit soon to discuss the violence in the deep South and ways to end it, Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said yesterday.

The visit in late February or early March was not related to the recent row with Singapore, he said.

"It's just a coincidence," he said.

Abdullah had shown "deep understanding" of problems in Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat and was eager to contribute to a solution, he said, adding that the meeting with Abdullah would be in Phuket and would be followed by the annual consultation in Kuala Lumpur in March.

Foreign Minister Nitya Pibulsonggram will firm up the visit with the Malaysians during his travel to Kuala Lumpur early next month.

"Malaysian leaders have made it clear they understand that because of their common border the two countries have a shared destiny. They need a peaceful border as much as we do," Nitya said.
