University meet in Chiang Mai

The University Presidents Council of Thailand will finalise the 2009 university-admis- sion criteria at its Chiang Mai meeting this Saturday, former chairman Pratya Vesarach said yesterday.

Utumporm Jamornmann, director of National Institute of Education Testing Service, is expected to propose that the grade point average for key subjects (GPA) and accumulative grade point average (GPAX) for senior secondary education account for half of the university admissions score, instead of the current 30 per cent.

Pratya believes Saturday's meeting will be lengthy, as some rectors are clearly worried about the variation in grading standards among schools. "In fact, these presidents even hope to reduce the weighting of GPA and GPAX to just 10 per cent."

He said Pavich Thongroj, the former secretary-general of the Higher Education Commission, once reported finding discrepancies between students' academic results as reported by their schools and their performances on the Ordinary National Educational Test (Onet) and Advanced National Educational Test (Anet), which are also key admission factors.

"Personally, I hope to see GPA getting little emphasis. I hope to see moral standards and attitude tests have some say in the admission criteria," Pratya said.

The criteria for academic

year 2009 need urgent con-

sideration because students should have a few years to prepare for university admission, he added.
