Killer's parents may face charges

Police yesterday said they would charge the parents of the vocational college student - who on Sunday shot dead his ex-girlfriend in a jealous rage and also attempted to kill her young sister - if it was found they helped to conceal the victim's body.

On Monday, Dusit Panitchaya-karn College student Atthit Phromchan, 20, was arrested for murdering his ex-girlfriend Supawadee Waengwan, 19, and attempting to kill her 11-year-old sister at his Lat Phrao home on Sunday. The young girl, however, regained consciousness and alerted the police.

Atthit's sister Jenjira, 18, and friend Maew Jaksupong, 26 , were also charged for helping to carry both victims to a refuse dump on a housing estate.

Asked about the victim's relatives' claim that Atthit's parents helped him to conceal the body and must be punished, Phaholyothin police deputy superintendent Lt-Colonel Thanakorn Konkaew said yesterday they had yet to summon the victim's sister as she was still in hospital.

"If the girl confirms the suspect's parents had anything to do with the crime, they will be charged for concealing a body," he said.

Earlier yesterday, Supawadee's relatives took her body from the morgue to be cremated. The autopsy revealed that she died from gunshot wounds to her heart and lung.

Supawadee's aunt Bang-on Waengwan, 32, told reporters that Atthit and 'Nong Oom' (Supawadee) were together for three years. After Nong Oom broke up with him three months ago, Atthit abducted her and locked her up for two days, Bang-on said.

"Her sister told me about the Sunday that Atthit had locked both of them up in a toilet from noon to 8pm, while waving his gun and threatening to shoot Nong Oom in the heart. Nong Oom begged him to do whatever he wanted with her alone - and to spare her sister. He then killed Nong Oom and strangled her sister until she passed out," Bang On said. "Atthit's parents were there and helped put the body in a box to be dumped. I want the police to punish them for helping their son to conceal the body," she added.

But Atthit's mother Chamrieng Phromchan insisted she and her husband had gone to a friend's place in Soi Seuyai Uthit when the crime happened - and urged police to call her friend to confirm their alibi.

"We have nothing to do with our son's actions. We learned of what happened that day from the police who searched our home because our daughter, who helped Atthit, did not tell us anything," she said.

Police yesterday took Atthit, his sister and friend to re-enact the crime amid tight security provided by 50 policemen.
