Sukhumvit stretch faces traffic chaos

Two traffic lanes on the stretch of Sukhumvit Road between On Nut Skytrain station and Bang Na were closed for 10 months effective 10pm yesterday.

The closure is necessary for the construction of a Sky-train extension route from On Nut to Soi Bearing (Sukhumvit Soi 107).

"It will affect an inbound lane and an outbound lane, leaving only two traffic lanes for each direction," Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin said yesterday.

He called on motorists to avoid the area as traffic jams could be expected.

He also handed out pamphlets detailing the affected spots and alternative routes.

The chief of the Traffic Police Division, Pol Maj-General Pramote Pathumwong, said he would let the district and central traffic police assist motorists in the traffic jams. He also asked motorists who could avoid the area to use other routes or the expressways.

Phra Khanong Police Station's traffic inspector, Major Thammarat Kitirattakorn, said he could foresee a traffic nightmare on the stretch of road today.
