New bins to ease threat from bombs
Transparent garbage bins are being installed in Bangkok's public parks as a security measure following the deadly bomb attacks on New Year's Eve, Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin said yesterday.
The see-through containers make it easier to spot bombs and suspicious parcels.Replacing the old metal bins, 200 new ones have been installed at four major public parks. Each has a capacity of 20 litres and costs around Bt550. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) plans to install 2,000 transparent bins in all of the capital's 22 public parks by the end of next week. As another security measure, BMA workers will collect household garbage more often and large-sized garbage bins will be removed from pavements along main roads, Apirak said. Transparent garbage bins will also be placed at bus stops in the near future, he said. The bomb blasts on New Year's Eve killed three people and wounded 42 others, including nine foreigners.
