Military manoeuvres

Eighty-four cavalry officers and battalion commanders lined up on Monday to convey New Year greetings to General Prem Tinsulanonda, president of the Privy Council.

Three days later, former prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh called on Prem for a confidential meeting.

Prem's message to the combat commanders was to restore social peace. Chavalit said he was told to stop commenting on the volatile political situation.

This week's happenings coincided with hushed talk in military barracks that former battalion commanders and senior generals seen as allies of the ousted government were behind the New Year's Eve bombings.

The July military rotation ahead of the coup appears to have been the catalyst for a reprisal against the coup leaders, who sidelined rising-star officers for the sake of political expediency.
