New SME projects

The Industry Ministry will join hands with the private sector and spend Bt800 million to develop small and medium-sized enterprises by launching six projects in the current fiscal year.

After signing a memorandum of understanding with the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) at the Siam City Hotel yesterday, Industry Ministry permanent secretary Chakramon Phasukvanich said the six projects would be implemented by the FTI and the Office of Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion.

He said two projects would focus on improving operators' skill by promoting industry standards and establishing training centres in each region.

The rest will concentrate on boosting competitiveness in the SME sector: business matching, machinery renovation, logistics development and industry development upcountry. All projects will take one year, starting on the day the contracts are signed, he added.

FTI chairman Santi Vilassakdanont said the private sector would propose all projects to Chakramon this month.

Chakramon said he would approve the process on that day, so that the FTI could use the budget and implement the projects at once. The current fiscal year runs until September 30.
