Borwornsak and Wissanu 'won't be drafting new charter'

Two law experts who served under the ousted government of Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday vowed not to get involved in the drafting of a new constitution.
"Don't worry, I will not touch the charter-drafting process," National Legislative Assembly member Borwornsak Uwanno said. Borwornsak used to serve as the Cabinet secretary-general and his critics claimed he had turned a blind eye to runaway power instead of blowing a whistle on it. He said he wanted to focus on his legislative duty and understood why he should stand aside during the charter rewrite. "I wrote the 1997 Constitution and would not want to defend its provisions in the light of the September 19 coup," he said. He also quoted former deputy prime minister Wissanu Krea-ngam as saying that he too would not have a role. News reports yesterday had speculated that Borwornsak and Wissanu might be asked to join the 35-member panel of charter writers. Political scientist Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, from the National Institute for Development Administration, said Wissanu was unfit to serve as a charter writer because of his past link to the ousted government.
