Govt to emphasise kids

The Cabinet has approved five important agendas for children and youths, including a push for family law to be a guarantee for children to receive proper care, Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said yesterday.
One part of yesterday's Cabinet meeting was joined by youths from all regions. It was good for youths to observe the country's administration at work while ministers could answer their questions, said Surayud after the meeting. The youths asked ministers about the southern unrest and southern youths' lack of educational opportunities, as well as about the promotion of science studies and career opportunities. The five agendas - proposed by youth representatives and approved by the Cabinet - include the drafting of family law to guarantee that the family would be the key institution in raising and developing children to become good and happy citizens, said Surayud. The Social Development and Human Security, Interior, Culture, Education and Public Health ministries would work together on the agendas, he said. Other agendas include the setting up of a fund to produce high-quality radio and television programmes for children, youths and families, and providing constructive activities for youths to develop various skills, boost their self-worth and participate in solving social issues. The government would improve childcare centres, nurseries and kindergartens to boost children's intelligence and emotional quotients by setting up a system to train teachers and babysitters as well as educating parents, the PM said. The final agenda is a "children's liveable province" project that aims to get all provinces to link with all parties and create a good and vice-free environment for children, he said.
