The Thai Rak Thai Party yesterday warned it would ask the Department of Special Investigation to investigate the Assets Examination Committee (AEC) and the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry for abuse of power if they did not soon probe allegations that Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont illegally occupied land in a forest reserve.
Supachai Jaisamut, a member of a TRT working group, believed the two agencies were being unfair in neglecting the case. He said the forest in Nakhon Ratchasima where Surayud's mountain retreat was built is a reserve area where dwellings are prohibited. The punishment was imprisonment of three to 15 years if Surayud was found guilty, he said. He accused the AEC and the ministry of not showing the same urgency in investigating the allegations against Surayud as they had in the purchase of a plot of land on Ratchadapisek Road by ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra's wife, Pojaman. "I will take legal action against the agencies if they don't do anything about the case," he said. The controversial land is owned by Surayud's wife Chitrawadee. Surayud and Chitrawadee yesterday refused to comment on the issue.
