Nanotech experts' heading this way

Thailand will host a major international nanotechnology seminar next week with more than 300 scientists attending, National Nanotechnology Centre (NanoTech) director Wiwat Tanthaphanichkul said yesterday.
He said the organiser of the event - the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering-Nano Technology Council (IEEE-NTC) - had agreed to dedicate it to the celebration of His Majesty the King's the 80th birthday later this year. The annual seminar, only the second so far, will be held at the Imperial Queen's Park Hotel from January 17-19. Highlights at the seminar, titled "The 2nd IEEE Nano/Micro Engineered and Molecular Systems 2007", will be production trends in nano products, such as a pacemaker attached to the wearer's shirt that has a direct Internet link to hospitals to monitor their heart condition, Wiwat said. Among the renowned nanotechnology experts attending is Dr Don EIgler, who created a microscopic IBM logo and also the Royal emblem of His Majesty the King using nanotechnology. Thailand will present 43 research papers at the seminar. Among key local research work is the study on "production and characterisation of rice bran extract encapsulated in solid lipid nanoparticles for dermal delivery" by Thai researcher Dr Uracha Ruktanonchai of NanoTech. The fees for the seminar are US$450 (Bt16,200) for students and $550 for researchers.
