Prom ready for the European invasion

For any young golfer an introduction to a team tournament of the calibre of the Ryder Cup can be a daunting experience. Thai prodigy Prom Meesawat, however, is relishing the challenge to pit his wits against world-class players in the Royal Trophy, which tees-off on Friday.

Brimming with confidence after an impressive season last year, where he claimed his maiden title, the SK Telecom Open, as a professional golfer, the 22-year-old Prom, dubbed "Big Dolphin" for the size of his body and for his roots in the coastal town of Hua Hin, said he was ready to take on the big-names in the "Battle of the Continents".

"I was quite high up in the Asian rankings for the entire year last season. This has given me a lot more confidence and I am ready for the Royal Trophy. It is a big occasion as I will be representing not only my country but also the entire continent. It's a big responsibility but also a tremendous opportunity," said the burly Prom.

With two other Thai golfers Taworn Wiratchan and Thongchai Jaidee included in the Asia team, Prom is determined to show off his skills to prove that Thailand is teeming with golf talent.

"It is very good that we have three Thai players in the Asian Team. It is great on many fronts - it shows that Thai golf has grown a lot and has become much stronger, it shows that Thai golf now not only has one or two good players but a real depth. It also confirms that golf in Thailand is now not a 'one generation wonder'. Thaworn has just turned 40, Thongchai is in his thirties and I am twenty two," said Prom, the youngest player in the event.

Prom no doubt is an inspiration for young golfers taking up the sport at a more serious level.

"The Royal Trophy is so special in the sense that we are not playing for ourselves. It is not each man for himself. We are playing for the team. We are playing for captain Joe Ozaki, for our team-mates and we are playing for the people of Asia. This is really important because it gives the young generation the opportunity to look up and think that if they work hard enough and smart enough they may be the ones in the Asian team in five or 10 years."

After watching Europe team seal a narrow victory last year on television, Prom, who turned professional in 2004, says he is anxiously waiting for the opportunity to help Asia take the coveted trophy.

Given that the Asian line-up boasts high-profile players such as Indian star Jeev Milkha Singh, who last year crowned a stellar season by sealing the Order of Merit title, Prom is convinced the team is capable of defeating the star-studded Europe side.

"The Europeans are very good but we have a great team as well. I had a very good 2006 and gained a lot of confidence and experience but we also have Jeev Milkha Singh who has been playing great, we have YE Yang who was outstanding in Shanghai and won in a tournament that featured most of the world's top players.

"Further, we have Thongchai and Thaworn who are always dangerous players and even more so when playing in Thailand, and we can count on Toru Taniguchi, who has the experience of winning 11 career titles. We have a very solid team.

"It is a great feeling. I feel like the young brother in our team. I am sure that my Asian team-mates will look after me like big brothers. It is going to be fantastic.

"I am also very excited about playing under Ozaki. He will

lead us and he will help us with strategy. I can assure you and all of the fans of this, we will do whatever it takes to secure the win. We will fight very, very hard," said Prom.

The Royal Trophy will take place at Amata Spring Country Club on January 12-14. Eight top players will represent Europe and Asia respectively. The Europeans will be led by 87-career title winner Spaniard Seve Ballesteros while the Asian troop will be captained by Ozaki.
