Royal gifts to cheer up girl hurt in Khlong Toei

A 12-year-old girl injured by a bomb on New Year's Eve got a wonderful surprise yesterday - a big Pooh bear and a Barbie doll sent graciously by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

Thanyasinee Mangkornphan received the royal gifts along with a get-well-soon card from the Princess via the Thai Red Cross Society's secretary-general, Pan Wannamethee.

The girl is still being treated at Chulalongkorn Hospital after undergoing operations to remove shrapnel from her legs. More x-rays are scheduled to check if there is any more shrapnel in her body.

"She keeps complaining about the pain. She has had nightmares about her uncle, who was killed in the bomb explosion," Thanasyin's mother, Jampa Sarasarin, said.

Thanyasinee was injured and her uncle was killed when the bomb exploded in the Khlong Toei area at about 6pm on Sunday.

Jampa said Pan handed Thanyasinee a Buddha amulet he had received from the Princess after hearing about the girl's bad dreams.

"I am delighted about the heartfelt care we have received from the Princess and everyone," Jampa said.

She said the hospital had taken very good care of her daughter and she appreciated the warm wishes from people across the country.

A representative from the Crown Property Bureau also visited Thanyasinee yesterday, giving her a basket of books and dolls. The bureau also offered to grant her a scholarship.

After visiting Thanyasinee, Pan visited four other bomb victims at Chulalongkorn Hospital and gave them get-well-soon cards from the Princess.

Public Health Minister Mongkol na Songkhla said yesterday that 17 people still in hospital after the bombings were recovering well and now out of danger.

Permanent secretary for Health Dr Prat Boonyawongvirot said the ministry would pay the medical costs of all people injured by the bombs.
