Security beefed up

Weapons scanners could be employed on participants to the children's day celebration at Government House, Education Minister Wijit Srisa-an said yesterday.

Some 3,000-5,000 people are expected to attend and the prime minister will give a speech at 10am during the annual event on January 13, he said.

Observances of National Youth Day should be held in schools only and police should be on hand to prevent security lapses, he said. Teachers and parents should be on alert and ready to evacuate the youngsters in case of bomb threats.

The Social Development and Human Security Ministry will set up a special counter-violence operations centre with a Bt3-Bt5 billion budget.
